Category:Indonesian booksDorothy Lamour is an American actress, singer and dancer, who is best known for playing the title role of the MGM-produced musical film The Red Shoes, and for her participation as a dancer on Broadway in Show Boat and The King and I.
Lamour was born on April 17, 1913, in New Orleans, Louisiana, as Dorothy Annie Gates. She was the daughter of Ella Mae Gates (née Jones) and Henry Gates Sr. A brother of hers named Henry was born in 1919. At some point, the family moved to California, where Lamour attended Hollywood High School. She began her career when she landed her first movie role in the 1933 film Hands Across the Border. Her breakthrough role came in the musical film The Red Shoes, which was released in 1935. The same year, Lamour was cast in the role of Cissie in the movie musical Show Boat. Her other notable performances include the MGM musical film Gambling in Bad Times, the 1937 film Tell No Tales, the 1939 film Undercurrent and the 1940 film Marie Antoinette.
Lamour also appeared in the television series The Gale Storm Show, having guest starred in the episode "Hollywood Affair" in 1953. Additionally, in 1959, she had a guest appearance in the episode "The Case of the Missing Mouse" on the ABC television series Tales of Wells Fargo.
After her marriage to the actor and former bandleader Al Jolson in 1937, Lamour began to focus on her acting career, having appeared in more than 50 motion pictures. Lamour won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film adaptation of Show Boat. The same year, she was cast as the title role of the 1937 Broadway musical The Red Shoes. The role garnered her four Tony Award nominations, including the one for Best Actress, in which she was eventually beaten out by Vivien Leigh for the performance of the same in the film version of The Red Shoes, released in 1941. Lamour returned to Broadway in Show Boat, playing the character Eponine in 1943. She later performed in The King and I in 1949.
